Monastery of the Holy Virgin - Sićevačka klisura

The Monastery of Holy Mary is located in the picturesque area of the Sicevo Gorge at the foot of the rocky hill Kusaca. The monastery complex is composed of: the church dedicated to the Initiation of Holy Mary, the monastery quarters , a drinking fountain a bell-foundry with two bells and the new quarters. The legend has it that on the hill at the right Nisava river bank, there was an old monastery of Initiation which was destroyed by the Turks, and that the present Monastery church was built from the remaining material. The church was erected and its iconostasis painted in 1647 in the period of the Patriarchate of Pec renewal. The church was demolished after the Austro-Turkish war 1689-1690 and renewed as late as in 1835 when the first monastery quarters were built. It was destroyed in 1841 when the Nis rebellion was subdued and it was renewed again in 1875.
