The current church was erected in 1878, supported by the contributions of Serbian families right after the liberation of Niš from the Turks. About one hundred meters above the current temple, one finds the remains of the original church, which was built by Stefan Nemanja, and which was dedicated to St. Healers, Cosmas and Damian, who were physicians, just like St. Panteleimon (Panteleon). Standing in front of the Church is the high bell tower, bequeathed by King Aleksandar Karađorđević in 1928. In the flanks of the church itself one finds the parakleses of St. Petka and St. Mark the Evangelist.
The walls still preserve a few frescoes from 1910, and there are remnants of the icons from the construction period. The current iconostasis was made in 1905. With its three layers, it still looks remarkable.
A number of springs around the church are believed to be holy and to produce miracles. The church, known among the common folk as Pantelej Church, is also the venue of an important historical event. Here, on July 27, 1189, Stefan Nemanja met the German emperor Fredric Barbarossa, who was taking the crusaders to conquer Jerusalem. A document remains which Stefan Nemanja signed, while Barbarossa left his fingerprint.
