The Liberated Nis

Upon liberation from the Turks, Nis finally ceased to be an oriental settlement, and began to be constructed in accordance with town planning principles. The city also flourished culturally and developed politically so as to become a real European city. In the following years the following were opened in Nis:

• The first grammar school in 1878
• The first bank in 1881
• Belgrade-Nis railroad in 1884
• The Sindjelic Theatre in 1887
• The National Library in 1889
• The Pasteur Institute in 1900
• The Art Colony in Sicevo, established by the painter Nadezda Petrovic in 1905
• The hydroelectric power plant on the Nisava in Sicevo in 1908
